The Premier League believes the “flow of the game” and the experience of players, supporters and viewers will be “enhanced” by the introduction of new AI-driven offside technology this autumn.

“Offside plane visualisation” for new technology

The Premier League has today signed a deal with Genius Sport to become its semi-automated offside technology supplier. Genius claims its 28 “computer vision cameras” give “complete pitch coverage”. This will provide “3D rendering” of players and the ball can generate a graphic “within seconds” to speed up VAR reviews.

“The introduction of semi-automated offside is an important move to maintain the flow of the game in the Premier League,” says Tony Scholes, chief football officer at the Premier League.

“We are confident that by using the newest and most accurate technology available we will see the time taken for offside decisions reduced significantly alongside a consistent application of the offside lines. The experience for all participants including supporters will also be enhanced through quicker communication and clearer imagery around offside decisions.”
