All plaid out. A night out in Munich.
Scots raise the roof and also raise money for charity on an epic evening.
All plaid out. That’s Munich. Where to start on the Tartan Army’s takeover of Bavaria? I had a night out to find out. Marienplatz in the centre of this glorious city makes an obvious starting point on Thursday evening. This famous square hosts a gathering of the clans with kilts and cans in preparation for tonight’s Euro 2024 opener against Germany at the Allianz Arena.
Sights and sounds are in abundance. Bagpipes skirl, flags swirl and beer’s swilled, occasionally spilled. One fan shows remarkable balance strolling around Marienplatz with a half-full glass on his head. All around him is revelry of the highest order, and not a hint of disorder.
Parking my car a mile away after the drive from covering England training, the first stop on my night out in Munich actually begins in a cultural centre hosting “The Stadium of Dreams”, a month-long festival celebrating a love of football. There are plays about Roberto Baggio and George Best and a panel on “the future of football” involving former German internationals Matthias Sammer and Celia Sasic. The European Championship trophy, known here as “EM”, drops by for selfie opportunities. DJ Slimgirl Fat plays a set.
There’s a poetry reading about a 14-year-old who has a vision discussing the virtues of Andi Brehme’s 1990 World Cup-winning penalty with Helen of Troy. Is the ref a homer? There’s another panel with Christian Karembeu, and another with Bayern Munich legend Uli Hoeness and Max Eberl, the club’s current director of sport.
