Erik ten Hag's days are numbered but Manchester United must take time to find the right successor with the right character.
Squad needs change as well as dugout.
“We have to walk to the right solution not run to the wrong one.” So said Sir Jim Ratcliffe when discussing his plans for transforming Manchester United. The right solution with Erik ten Hag is clearly that he is moved on this summer but they also must resist a hasty decision on his successor.
Ten Hag is clearly on borrowed time, appropriately given the way the Glazers leveraged their way into Manchester United in 2005. But now the more ambitious Ineos are in the building, shaping the footballing operations, bringing stronger leadership at the top, the clock really is ticking on Ten Hag’s tenure. Many United fans want him gone now, following the surrender at Crystal Palace, and he cannot survive the summer. But who comes in? This is where Ratcliffe’s run should slow to a walk.
