Lamps lights the way up for Coventry
Frank Lampard scored at Coventry City the last time they were in the top flight. It was a tap-in from a Frederic Kanoute cross, September 23, 2000, and Lampard was 22, making his name with West Ham United alongside Rio Ferdinand, Joe Cole and Michael Carrick. The following summer, Lampard signed for Chelsea and his career really took off. Coventry, meanwhile, headed into 25 years of hurt, exile from the the league they helped found, even exile from their own home for three seasons.
Eight years ago, Coventry were in League Two. Building on the vital work of Mark Robins, and now organised and inspired by Lampard, Coventry are possibly just three wins from the Premier League. It’s a story of fans who never lost the faith, of good managers and a chairman who has brought expertise, investment and stability.
