Luke Ayling, defender, leader, role model
Long read on an inspiration
I was once waiting in Leeds United’s small reception at their Thorp Arch training ground. There’s a counter on the left, and very friendly staff welcoming you, sorting out appointments, dealing with calls and deliveries. Usual club hubbub. There’s some chairs on the other side, a door leading to the changing rooms and stairs heading up to the players’ canteen. I was waiting to see a player for an interview when three young boys were shepherded in by a parent. They were there to see their favourite player, Luke Ayling.
Ayling is a role model to many for the whole-hearted way he plays. Fans see someone who cares for his teams and the clubs he represents. Many are also aware of his back-story, overcoming adversity. He was in the same Arsenal youth team as Jack Wilshere, acquired the nickname “Bill” because there was another Luke (Freeman) in the squad, got on the first-team bench once but his contract wasn’t renewed. He wasn’t downhearted. He just got on with making his dream happen.
