The last time England played Andorra, Jadon Sancho started and provided a series of fine crosses from the left, including two assists. Sancho earned plenty of praise for that performance four years ago, albeit against opponents high of altitude if not rankings. But he’s not played for England since.
Sancho’s not even in the England debate, let alone squad any more. While some of his friends train out in Girona in the heat, Sancho remains out in the international cold. Anthony Gordon, Eberechi Eze and Noni Madueke are in the squad and ahead of him as England left-sided options. Marcus Rashford, currently injured, is ahead of Sancho in Thomas Tuchel’s thinking. Jack Grealish, who came on for Sancho in Andorra Le Vella four years ago, is probably ahead of Sancho.
So what happened? Sancho was never as great as he was made out to be and is now not quite as bad as he’s being made out to be. A winger of considerable talent but lacking lightning pace and iron mentality now finds his career drifting. Only he can turn it around.
