Saga is a four-letter word, especially in football transfers. The Alexander Isak saga dominates much of pre-season, and there’s a dizzying amount of spinning going on. But it is possible to rise above the smoke and mirrors and establish certain truths: loyalty is for fans, not professional footballers; a pecking order of clubs exists; and it mainly comes down to money for player, agent and clubs. It’s a business. It’s also a reminder to all agents to try to demand a buy-out clause when negotiating the original contract. This saga would not have persisted had Isak a buy-out clause; surely, more will be inserted by others players and agents in future dealings.
Even if the stance of Isak and his representatives seems especially aggressive in pushing for this move to Liverpool, it is hardly a new tactic employed in the post-Bosman era of player-power. Brentford fans rightly highlight what’s happening to their club with their sole remaining star striker, Yoanne Wissa, pushing for a move - to Newcastle.
