Henry, it’s Pat Jennings’ 80th birthday today. The greatest keeper I ever saw play live. I would argue that he is, if anything, more deserving of a knighthood than Mr Beckham.
Absolute legend, Giles. Great point. I assume he’s been offered such major honours before. Work he does in the community. Beckham was overdue for his charity work including for the King’s charity. That would obviously count. Would you have him ahead of Peter Schmeichel?
Pat has got an OBE I think and a recently installed statue in Newry. I’m sure Beckham is deserving of it….i would love to see big Pat get one for all he did and continues to do - not least as a Northern Irish catholic. Schmeichel took keeping to a different level and of course had to use his feet far more. He would have thrived in the old world, using his physical presence. There was something about Pat and his one handed catches, overall longevity, ability to look after himself when keepers had little protection and some of his saves (without gloves) were unbelievable.
Those hands are huge, incredible really. He doesn’t seem to change either. Decades come and go and he looks the same. Statue must have been easy to do as he wasn’t going to change physically. Legend and humble with it.
